Writing
Foundation Stage
In the Nursery the children are given plentiful opportunities for mark making in both indoor and outdoor environments. This enables the development of their gross and fine motor skills as a pre-cursor to writing.
This continues into Reception where the children also participate in shared writing activities, with an adult acting as scribe. The children are taught letter formation and they are given opportunities for emergent writing. Their writing confidence is developed through supported writing in the Spring and Summer terms linked to their topic work.
Years 1 - 4
Opportunities for shared, guided and independent writing are provided throughout the year groups. The children are introduced to a range of text types and genres enabling them to write in a variety of styles and forms appropriate to the situation.
Spelling is taught initially through phonic work. Weekly spelling tests start in Year 1 in the Spring Term and continue through to Year 4. Children are grouped by ability and they have the opportunity to practise their spellings both at home and in school. Weekly spellings may include phonic patterns, high frequency words or topic words as appropriate to each class.
Handwriting is taught as a class activity from Year 1. Children have dedicated handwriting books and correct formation of letters is reinforced. In Year 1 the children print their letters without flicks. In Year 2 the children learn to add flicks to their letters ready for joined writing, the teaching of which is started towards the end of the Autumn Term. Joined writing continues to be taught throughout Years 3 and 4.
