Organisation
Robert Peel School which was opened in 1972 is a co-educational 5 - 11 years Primary School of approximately 300 pupils. Attached to the school is our Nursery Unit.
Children are admitted into the Nursery Unit in the term after they turn three on a part-time basis. All children transfer to the main school when they reach statutory school age.
The classes are formed according to the National Curriculum year groups and all classes are of mixed ability pupils. In addition to being taught as a class, depending on the task in hand, children work either individually or in equal or mixed ability groups.
All classes have their own class teacher and each teacher is also responsible for the co-ordination of a specific area of the curriculum throughout the school. The school is extremely well staffed and classes are kept as small as possible, particularly those for the younger children.
School Day
8.45 -11.45 for the morning nursery group and an optional lunch club from 11.45 - 12.45
9.00 - 12.00 Reception morning session and 1.15- 3.15 afternoon session
8.55 - 12.00 Key Stage 1 morning session and 1.15-3.20 afternoon session
8.55 - 12.15 Key Stage 2 morning session and 1.15- 3.20 afternoon session
There is a 20 minute break in the morning for all pupils and a break in the afternoon for Key Stage 1 pupils.
Arriving at school
The school gates are opened at 8.45 am and at that time children can go straight to their classrooms. The gates are then locked at 9.00 am and remain locked throughout the day for security reasons. All children need to be in their classes by 9.00 when registers are taken.
Please try to get your child to school on time. Late arrivals are noted in our registers and if a child is late, it is a bad start to the day; repeated lateness is both a disturbance to the class and is detrimental to your child’s progress.
Leaving School
The school gates will be opened at 3.15 pm to allow parents on to the school site to collect their children. Parents are asked to remain by either of the two main gates to avoid congestion near the classroom exits as the children leave.
Occasionally children have to be collected from school to keep a dental or medical appointment. Again for security reasons, the parent should always contact the school office before collecting their child.
Road Safety and Parking
If you are driving your child to school, if at all possible, please use Dapifer Drive. For safety reasons, children are not allowed in thecar park area. We would ask parents to cut car use down to a minimum and to use extreme care when driving and parking near the school. Please do not use the car park area as a pedestrian access.
If you do park at any time in Alfred Cope Road, will you please be careful not to restrict access to the residents’ driveways as clearly this
causes much inconvenience and justifiable annoyance.
The roads around our school can become congested with cars at the beginning and at the end of the school day and we ask you to ensure the children’s safety at all times.
For safety reasons, bicycles are not allowed to be ridden across our playground.
Absence from School
Please telephone the school or write a note to the class teacher explaining your child’s absence. We are required to indicate reasons for absence in the registers and to publish annually the number of children who are absent without authorisation.
Registers are checked on a weekly basis and your attention will be drawn to any absences that we have not been informed about.
The Education Welfare Officer may also call if your child has regular and frequent absences.
In the case of stomach upsets, it is important that children are kept away from school for at least 48 hours after the last attack has taken place as such upsets spread very quickly in a school.
